Carla had it all—big job, big house, a successful husband. But she longed for a child to complete her marriage and family. Her born-again husband refused to submit to medical scrutiny. His excuse: "If God wanted to give us a child, He would." Simon's smug pontifications and his seeming lack of concern sicken her. So she seeks her own solution—artificial insemination with donor sperm.
This is a superbly and tastefully written novel on a subject that touches all too many couples. While infertility is at issue, the story emphasizes the subject of honesty in marriage.
